Synopsis
Als ich zwölf war, ging mein Vater nach Palästina zurück. Ohne uns. Wir blieben in Berlin. Sein Traum, sich ein Haus zu bauen und für die Freiheit Palästinas zu kämpfen, scheiterte: Er wurde von den Israelis ausgewiesen. Da stand er wieder vor unserer Tür. Müde Augen. Müde Knochen. Meine Mutter schaute ihn an, sagte nichts und ließ ihn rein. Seitdem mein Vater aus Palästina zurück ist, sitzt er unten im Keller. Wie eine Schildkröte zurückgezogen in seinen Panzer. Meine Mutter wohnt oben. Sie streiten nicht mehr, sie gehen sich aus dem Weg. In unserem Haus herrscht Stille. Durchbrochen nur von den knarzenden Schritte meiner Mutter auf der Treppe. Dem Surren des Fernsehers im Keller. Und meinen Fragen an meinen Vater.
Schildkrötenwut erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes mit vielen Rätseln, dessen Leben geprägt ist von Flucht und Vertreibung, dem Leben im Exil und der gescheiterten Rückkehr nach Palästina. Eine zerrissene Biographie. Und die Suche einer Tochter nach Antworten - Antworten, die er oft nicht geben kann. Eine Reise von Vater und Tochter durch Ägypten, Palästina und Jordanien. Streit am Flughafen. Singen mit den Taxifahrern. Einsame Nächte in Hotels. Verhandlungen an verlassenen Tankstellen. Bier trinken in der Naqab-Wüste. Eine Geschichte mit vielen Zwischentönen, die ein Denken in Opfer und Täter, Gut und Böse, Schwarz und Weiß unmöglich macht.

The emotional and psychological richness of the film, and also its political force, come from the filmmaker’s lucidity about, and complicity with, a struggle (that of her father, and also, by implication, that of a certain group of Palestinians in exile) that has become diverted from its original meaning and purpose to become no longer a struggle against placenessness and estrangement, but the struggle to sustain a way of life that is premised on placenessness and estrangement."

The film "The Turtle’s Rage" of Pary El-Qalqili is a quest for understanding the identity of a Palestinian that happens to be the director's father. The film stays away from mere political statements, no matter Pary's father has a rebelious point of view in face of the facts that shaped Palestine's fate and his own. The film portrays a paradox: the helplessness in face of Israeli occupation and the thirst for fighting injustice an oblivion. At moments hilarious, the film also conveys a universal message: the harships of inter-generational communication.

Director’s Statement
2009 begann ich an einem autobiographischem Film mit meinen Vater zu arbeiten "Schildkrötenwut". Der Film erzählt von dem Leben meines Vaters als Exil-Palästinenser in Deutschland. Von seinem Trauma der Vertreibung durch die Israelis, der dreifachen Flucht meiner palästinensischen Familie, der Migration nach Deutschland, der gescheiterten Ehe mit meiner deutschen Mut-ter, der zunehmenden Isolation in der deutschen Gesellschaft, der Sehnsucht und Rückkehr nach Palästina, der Ausweisung durch den israelischen Staat und der zwangsweisen Rückkehr nach Deutschland. Der Film ist aus der Ich-Pers-pektive, d.h. von mir als Tochter, erhählt.

...In diesem Fall war Wut der Auslöser den Film zu machen – die Wut des eigenen Vaters, weil er seine Geschichte nicht erzählen kann, weil sie in Deutschland nicht verstanden wird, weil die Tochter schwarze Löcher in seinem Narrativ berührt. El-Qalqili will mehr als Wut und Ohnmacht, sie will ihren Vater kennenlernen, Antworten auf ihre Fragen finden. Also begibt sie sich in direkte Konfrontation und schafft Räume für Gespräche, die filmisch sehr eng und gelungen mit der Geschichte eines Mannes im Exil verwoben sind. Der erste filmische Kontakt hat auf einer gemeinsamen Reise nach Palästina stattgefunden. Das Projekt war zu dem Zeitpunkt noch ein anderes, ein Film über die Biographie ihres Vaters. Erst dort habe sie bemerkt, dass es nicht nur um ihn, sondern auch um sie gehen muss – es geht um etwas, was die beiden zu verhandeln haben... (read more)
